Fashion's Night (In? Or) Out

"In a global initiative to promote retail, restore consumer confidence, and celebrate fashion, U.S. and international editions of Vogue are coordinating evening extravaganzas in their respective world fashion capitals." --From the official Fashion's Night Out Website
d
GLOBAL LAUNCH DATE: Thursday, September 10th
d
PARTICIPATING CITIES & COUNTRIES: New York City, Berlin, London, Greece, Italy, Russia, France, Brazil, India, Spain, China, Japan, Taiwan
d
I must say that my initial reaction to news of Fashion's Night Out, Vogue and the fashion industry's attempt to spur fall sales, was that of skepticism. A night of shopping and fashion parties? Big whoop. I like to shop without crowds and with sales. But I must say I was a little stunned when I learned about the extent, variety, and incentives of this global fashion party.
d
According to Racked, Anna Wintour will be at Macy's (in Queens); Narciso Rodriguez, the Proenza Schouler boys, Thakoon Panichgul, Jason Wu, and Peter Som will be at Kirna Zabete; Hamish Bowles will be at Juicy Couture; Alexa Chung will be DJing at Miu Miu; Annie Leibovitz, Padma Lakshmi, Zac Posen, Donna Karan, Alexander Wang, and other designers will be at Bergdorf Goodman engaging in games, cook-offs, and talks; the Olsen Twins will be DJing at Barneys along with Isabel Toledo and Alexander Wang giving runway lessons and Juan Carlos Obando giving salsa lessons. And this is just a sampling of the heavy hitters coming to promote this event.
d
What about other incentives? Customize your t-shirts and Havaianas at Adam Lippes' store; design your own Chanel bag while enjoying a free manicure; take your photo at H&M (for a chance to have your picture projected onto a giant billboard); audition to be a model at Alice + Olivia; and enjoy live Irish music at Rag and Bone.
d
The real question is this: Will you attend, and if so, will you shop? I wonder if this clever marketing ploy will actually compel you to open your wallet--or will it only be a night of celebrity gawking accompanied by moonshine and music?

If I live where you live, I'd go in a heartbeat! BUT, I'll leave my credit card at home and only take cash just in case I get tempted with buying something. The star sightings is also a good incentive.

And with this I ask myself, why oh why do I live here in Minnesota?!! Sigh.

Enjoy your meet-up with Kat & Lynn, I am so jealous! I can't wait for Kat to be back and update me about it! =)

Have a good long weekend Thumbelina! =)

I'm an exceedingly private shopper, so I'd go for the spectacle and take notes.

But then I just saw the Alice & Olivia model bit, and I wonder whether I could audition in their paneled sequined leggings. From their supply, of course . . . ;-)

i'd definitely attend! in fact, most anything fashion-wise sounds interesting compared to my tiny little, far-from-anywhere world!

I'm resting up for my own party the next day. I don't have a strong desire to shop amongst crowds anyway.

I'm going for sure. Specifically to the event at Fred Segal Hollywood. I am a retailer in Malibu and I feel it's important to participate.
Great blog.
Adding you to my blogroll : )

omgggggggg i would totally go to any of those events if i lived in ny!!! FNO is having a little stint in LA too, where i'm from, so hopefully the goodies are just as good!!!
i totally know what you mean about shopping without crowds!!! it takes a LOT more effort when there are lots of people to weave around and standing in long lines!

Hey missy! So yea! so much going on right? I just finished shopping at the Barney's warehouse yesterday, it was brutal as usual but worth it, so with that being said, I highly doubt I will be shopping that day.. Honeslty, I just want to take cool pics and have a few drinks..if places are too packed I will bounce to another spot because I sincerely despite large crowds, long lines, and any pushing or shoving that comes with it..I definitely want to do Barney's and the Soho stores with Maury..and maybe rag and bone if we get around to it. And I thought alexa chung would be at Chanel spinning? hmm. anyways, maybe we'll bump into you in soho, can't wait to meet ya:-))
xoxo!

Hey there lovely Thumbelina! I can't believe I met you and Lynn yesterday!!!!! haha! I was kind of in awe of it all...NYC and meeting two fabulous bloggers. Star-struck would be an appropriate term to describe how I felt. Truly great experience...our best NYC lunch really! Thanks again...and if you and Lynn, by some twist of fate, find yourselves in Minneapolis, call me.

And about your post...I'll attend if I have a company of girl friends. One night of gawking at some stars seems fun. I can't shop when there are too many other things going on. Besides, it takes me several viewings of a particular item before I actually buy it. haha!

How FREAKY, was just going to ask what YOU thought about it! I just found out from some very fashion forward girls I met yesterday:

http://streetstylelondon.blogspot.com/2009/09/top-shop-tonight.html

and I'm thinking of going to the Topshop one, which they said was meant to be the 'best'. Was going to ask a few friends, as my husband goes to sleep early, but as far as I can tell, it starts @ 11. PM.

Question: am I too old for this stuff????
